Lake Tahoe Preparatory School, Lake Tahoe, California

Lake Tahoe Preparatory Schooly is a college-preparatory international boarding school at Lake Tahoe, California for 100+ co-ed students in grades 9-12. Students have full English immersion and attend regular academic classes with American students. Students live in campus dormitory rooms. The average class size is eight students. Students are required to attend evening study hall, proctored by adults, Sunday-Thursday.

Our teachers work closely with each student and in small groups to help achieve best results. We have two-hour evening study halls each school night supervised by SVA faculty. Those study halls and our average class size of 8 students assure personal attention and a climate of success for each student.

Our team and individual outdoor sports in the fall and spring include soccer, mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, kayaking, yoga, running, and weight training. During the winter season, if schoolwork is up-to-date, students may ski and snowboard daily at Squaw Valley USA, 2 miles from school with thirty (30) ski lifts and site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. Weekends see a variety of staff chaperoned activities including: movies in Tahoe City, Truckee, or Reno; dinners on the town; shopping excursions to Reno; paintball games and bowling in Incline Village; kayaking on Lake Tahoe; rock climbing; and some overnight trips to Sacramento or San Francisco.

Summer students may earn credit for one semester in three weeks or one school year in six weeks. Students enroll in two-hour classes in the mornings and enjoy summer fun at Lake Tahoe in the afternoons at the local pool, the local soccer field, one of Lake Tahoe's many beaches, or in the Tahoe National Forest.

Fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Lake Tahoe Preparatory School meets the California state standards for high school students. Our faculty prepares students for the college of their choice by meeting the standards for the University of California system.

Lake Tahoe Preparatory School recognizes that most international students need additional language-based support, particularly when they first arrive in the US. English as a Second Language (ESL) is included in the tuition at Lake Tahoe Preparatory School. We require all International students to take an English comprehension test upon arrival, and that test score allows Lake Tahoe Preparatory School to find the appropriate ESL level for each student's needs and abilities.

Lake Tahoe Preparatory Schooly features an Afternoom ESL Support Program for two hours after each school day. Students are divided into the Afternoon ESL Support Program based on academic needs and their reading level. The ESL Support Program aims to provide each student with the opportunity to develop their English skills in an extra two to three hour period. The objective of the Afternoon ESL Support Program is to ensure all students are reading on or above their grade level expectation. Students work to develop their knowledge and skills in two differentiated reading programs.

Lake Tahoe Preparatory School students engage in daily athletics, mostly of their choice, and enjoy fun weekend activities. Students at Lake Tahoe Preparatory Schooly can participate in athletics every school day as long as they maintain academic and behavioral standards. During the Fall semester, students take part in hiking, fishing, biking, skateboarding, rock climbing, swimming, weightlifting, and exercise gym. Students may choose to join the Lake Tahoe Preparatory School soccer team from August to November, and then many join winter-season basketball beginning in November.

In winter, Lake Tahoe Preparatory School students may ski or snowboard seven days per week. Although students choose their athletics on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and weekends, every student in good behavioral and academic standing takes part in all-school skiing days on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, when staff and students ski and snowboard at Squaw Valley.
