Acting U.S. Surgeon General to Speak at Storm King School’s Commencement

Storm King School’s Headmaster Paul Domingue has announced that Rear Admiral (RADM) Boris D. Lushniak, Acting Surgeon General of the United States, has accepted the school’s invitation to serve as commencement speaker on June 7, 2014. “We are delighted that Dr. Lushniak will address our 2014 graduates and families,” Mr. Domingue commented. “His advocacy of public health initiatives, promoting the welfare of our nation’s youth, resonates strongly with our own school’s commitment to student well-being.”

A native of Chicago, Dr. Lushniak’s impressive medical and public health career spans more than three decades. In July 2013, he assumed the responsibilities of Acting U.S. Surgeon General following several years as Deputy Surgeon General, the culmination of nearly 25 years at the United States Public Health Service. As Acting Surgeon General, Dr. Lushniak is responsible for articulating the best available scientific information to the public and heads the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, which consists of more than 6,700 officers who serve in locations around the world to promote, protect, and advance the health and safety of our Nation. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Lushniak has worked in various leadership capacities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Drug Administration. He has lent his expertise in places such as Bangladesh, St. Croix, Russia, Kosovo, New York City (at Ground Zero after 9-11) and Washington D.C. following the anthrax attacks.

Dr. Lushniak holds a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Medical Science and Medical Degree (M.D.) from Northwestern University, a Master’s in Public Health (M.P.H.) from Harvard University, and is board certified in dermatology and preventative medicine. He is active in many professional organizations, is adjunct professor of dermatology at the Uniformed Service University of the Health Sciences, and lives in Maryland with his wife and two daughters.

All Storm King students participate in a balanced program of academics, arts, athletics, environmental education, and character development. Students develop the knowledge, skills, values and habits of mind to succeed in university studies, leading to a lifetime of meaningful contributions to society. The School emphasizes a balanced, holistic approach, helping all students to achieve their potential, each in his or her own way.
