The sooner you make your housing plans, the more options you will have. We recommend that you arrange your housing ten weeks before you arrive in Seattle.

Internships and Volunteering

An internship is special educational work experience that relates to a student's field of study. Internships can be paid or unpaid, but, most importantly, they give an opportunity for a student to apply academic knowledge in a practical way. Paid off-campus internships may be available to students in programs 9 months or longer.

Seattle Central's Office of Cooperative Education and Career Placement offers students a variety of resources, including current job postings, a database of hundreds of paid and unpaid internship opportunities, staff members ready to offer personal assistance, and group workshops designed to help you get the internship you want. Our location in the heart of downtown Seattle means that we are a natural place for local businesses to advertise their many internship opportunities. And every year, nearly 600 Seattle Central students participate in the Cooperative Educations Internship program, many of whom successfully find internships by using our on-campus resources.

Gap Year

Students interested in studying abroad during their Gap Year between high school and university, or at any time throughout their university studies, have the opportunity to participate in any of the below programs. All of Seattle Central’s Gap Year oriented programs last between 8 weeks and 12 months, and students can study a combination of programs as well, depending on English proficiency.

Short Term Certificates:

Students who prove proficient in English can study in our Short Term Certificate program. Length of study varies depending on the student’s goals. This program is ideal for students wishing to study abroad during their school breaks, or during their Gap Year. Students in the Short Term Certificate program are studying college level classes alongside their domestic and international peers. Available subjects include Business, Computer Studies, Fine Arts, Communication, among many others. Minimum course length is one quarter (10 weeks in Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters, and 8 weeks in Summer quarter). Students may also choose to study two, three or four quarters, up to a maximum of 12 months. All students must arrive 7-10 days in advance for testing and orientation.

English as a Second Language (ESL):

Seattle Central College's ESL programs and classes are perfect for students wishing to focus on developing their English skills. ESL courses offer instruction in Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Speaking/Listening. College electives are also an option as students advance through upper levels. This is another ideal program for students wishing to study for a limited amount of time. Each ESL level is 10 weeks long in Fall, Winter and Spring quarters, and 8 weeks in Summer quarter, plus 7-10 days prior to the start date for testing and orientation.

Combination:

Students who are at an intermediate or advanced level of English and are studying at least 6 months may have the opportunity to participate in both our ESL and Short Term Certificate programs during their Gap Year. Students can begin their studies in our ESL programs, then advance to the Short Term Certificate program of their choice once their language skills are sufficient.

Double the Experience – ESL Partner Combination:

Seattle Central has partnerships with many English language institutions throughout the United States. Gap Year students who study at one of our partner ESL institutions and then complete their Gap Year with us in our Short Term Certificate program, are able to experience American life in more than one city in the United States. This is perfect for students who wish to explore multiple locations, while still receiving an official college Certificate from Seattle Central at the end of their Gap Year.
